Columbia River Gorge
Following the Columbia River, the Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular canyon cutting the only sea-level route
through the Cascade Mountain Range. It's 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep with the north canyon walls
in Washington and the south canyon walls in Oregon. This was the Oregon Trail route to the
Salem area, and
today it is one of Oregon's most popular vacation destinations.
Country living and scenery are the main
attractions here, especially waterfalls. Multnomah Falls is the second highest year-round
waterfall in the United States. Though Multnomah Falls is grand and popular, all of the
falls in the Gorge are special and breathtaking. Many retirees are discovering the charm
of rural living in a variety of small towns along the Gorge, all within a short drive of
Portland.
